What the question is really asking
Two different things get asked with the same words.
One is whether you will spend time abroad: study, a posting, a few years somewhere else and then home. The other is whether you will actually leave, build a life elsewhere, and not come back.
These feel identical when you are planning them and they read very differently in a chart. Separating them is the most useful thing this reading does, because people commit to the second while their chart only supports the first, and then spend a decade wondering why nothing settled.
The three indicators
In Bhrigu Nandi Nadi (BNN), foreign settlement is read from three things together rather than any one of them.
The 12th house is the foreign land itself. Living away, expenditure overseas, the unfamiliar environment. This is the primary indicator, and it is the one most readings under-use.
The 9th house is the long-distance journey: travel far from where you began, fortune found at a distance, and higher education overseas.
Rahu, one of the two lunar nodes, is the planet of foreign influence, unconventional paths and cross-cultural connection. Rahu is what makes a foreign life attractive rather than merely possible.
The rule is straightforward. When all three are active, foreign settlement is strongly supported. When only one is active, you may travel abroad, perhaps repeatedly, but permanent settlement is unlikely.
Reading the strength
Some configurations are considerably stronger than others, and it is worth being specific rather than vague.
- Rahu in the 12th house is the strongest single indicator there is. It very often accompanies foreign settlement.
- Rahu in the 9th house is strong: frequent foreign travel, and settlement genuinely possible.
- A link between the 9th and 12th houses, in either direction, is strong, and tends to produce settlement through education or through a stroke of fortune abroad.
- Moon in the 12th with Rahu involvement is strong, and shows as an emotional pull towards elsewhere rather than a practical one.
- Saturn in the 12th is moderate. Settlement through hard work, and often with a period of real isolation early on. This is the pattern behind the person who got there and found it lonely.
- Venus in the 12th is moderate, and tends towards a comfortable life abroad.
- Jupiter in the 12th is moderate, and points to education, advisory work or something with a moral or spiritual dimension to it.
- An empty 12th house with a weak Rahu is low. Foreign travel is possible; settlement is not the story of this chart.
None of this is destiny. It describes how much of the chart is pulling in that direction, which is a different and more honest claim.
Direction, not destination
People always ask which country, so it is worth saying clearly what can and cannot be answered.
BNN does not name countries. The planets involved lean towards types of place rather than specific ones. Venus tends towards Europe and towards comfort. Mars leans to industrial economies and the Middle East. Mercury favours commercially active and English-speaking places. Saturn indicates labour-intensive economies and colder climates. A Rahu and Jupiter combination tends towards the English-speaking Western nations.
Treat these as leanings. Anyone naming a city has left the method behind.
Timing, and what actually moves
The structure above says whether. Timing says when, and it is read separately.
The mechanism is degree sequencing. Among the planets connected to the 12th house, the 9th house and Rahu, the one at the lowest degree acts first. Its activation marks the earliest genuine foreign opportunity, and the higher-degree planets mark the later ones.
There is a practical consequence worth knowing. If Rahu sits at a lower degree than the other foreign indicators, the pull abroad tends to appear early in life, often before twenty-five, and usually through education. If Rahu is at a higher degree, the move comes later and is more often career-driven.
For the activation itself, the slow planets do the work. Jupiter moving over the 9th or 12th house is the classic trigger for an approval or an opening. Saturn over the 12th tends to produce delay and refusal, and it also produces the settlement that is earned the hard way rather than granted easily.

What this cannot do
It cannot get a visa approved. Immigration decisions are made on eligibility, paperwork and policy, and no chart touches any of them.
It cannot tell you whether your case is legally sound. That is a question for an immigration adviser, and it is the more important question of the two.
And a refusal during an obstructive period is not a permanent answer. The common pattern is that an application refused under a difficult transit succeeds later on substantially the same facts. Knowing that in advance is worth something, mostly because it stops a refusal being read as a verdict.
Where a reading actually helps
In three places.
It tells you whether you are looking at travel or at settlement, which changes what you should be committing to. It tells you which periods carry the opening, which matters when you have any discretion at all over when to apply. And it tells you what the move is likely to cost you, because a Saturn-driven settlement and a Jupiter-driven one produce very different first five years, and it is better to know which one you are walking into.
