The single most common problem in a reading
Almost every difficulty in a predictive reading traces back to one input: the birth time. Not the method, not the reader, and not the chart software. The time.
This is worth understanding before booking any consultation, because the decision it leads to is a decision you have to make, and making it badly quietly ruins everything downstream.
What the time actually sets
The rising sign, the Lagna, is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It advances through all twelve signs in roughly twenty-four hours, which means it changes about every two hours.
The rising sign anchors the house framework. House one begins there, and every other house follows from it. So the birth time does not adjust the chart at the margins; it decides which part of the chart is doing which job.
Two charts from the same day, four hours apart, share every planetary position to within a fraction of a degree. They can still be read as two quite different lives, because the same planets are sitting in different houses.
What an error of two hours costs
If the recorded time is wrong by enough to shift the rising sign, the following change:
- Which house each planet occupies, and therefore what area of life each planetary chain speaks to
- Which planets govern which parts of the chart
- The house-based half of the timing, which is a large part of it
What survives an error of a couple of hours is the planetary positions themselves and the Yuti bonds between them, apart from the Moon, which moves fast enough to matter. So a chain of conjunctions may still be read correctly while the question of what that chain is about is answered wrongly.
This is the failure mode worth naming: a wrong birth time does not usually produce an obviously broken reading. It produces a confident, coherent reading of a chart that is not yours.
Where to find a reliable time
In descending order of trustworthiness:
- A birth certificate that records the time. In the UK this is on the long-form certificate for multiple births and often on hospital records rather than the certificate itself. Worth checking.
- Hospital records. Often obtainable on request, and typically recorded within a few minutes of the event.
- A contemporaneous family record. A note in a book, a card, a diary entry made at the time.
- A parent's recollection. Usable, and it should be treated as approximate. Remembered times cluster suspiciously around the hour and half hour.
- A family story about the time of day. "Just after the morning prayers" is worth more than a made-up number, because it is honest about being a range.
If you genuinely do not know
Say so. This is the entire point of this article.
The booking form on this site asks for a birth time and has a checkbox saying the time is not known. Ticking it stores the time as genuinely absent rather than as an empty value, which means the reading treats the house-dependent parts as uncertain and says so during the session.
That produces a reading that is narrower and honest. Supplying a plausible guess instead produces a reading that is broad and possibly wrong, delivered with exactly the same confidence. The first is more useful.
What can still be read without a time
More than people expect:
- The planetary chains and their Yuti bonds, since these depend on positions rather than houses
- The trine relationships that carry much of the BNN reading
- Transit activation of those chains, which is where most of the timing comes from
- Broad constitutional and professional indications that follow from the chains
What weakens is the assignment of chains to specific life areas, and any judgement that depends on the ascendant. A reading without a time is a real reading with a stated limitation, not a wasted appointment.
Birth time rectification, briefly
Rectification is the practice of working backwards from known life events to estimate an unknown birth time. It is a legitimate technique and it is genuinely difficult to do well, because it requires enough dated events to constrain the answer and enough discipline not to fit the time to whatever conclusion was already wanted.
It is not part of a standard consultation, and it is not something to attempt casually. Where the question comes up, it is better raised through the contact form than assumed.
The practical summary
Look for the time before you book. Check the certificate, ask the hospital, ask the family. If you find it, give it exactly. If you do not, tick the box and say so.
The reader can work with a stated unknown. What nobody can work with is a guess presented as a fact.
